What will you be doing in 10 years -
2020? Will you be working as a perioperative nurse or enjoying
your golden years of retirement? in the August 2010 AORN Journal,
guest editorial Ellen Murphy RN,MS,JD,FAAN shares that the median age of
the current AORN membership is 53 years! If current
membership trends continue, in 10 years, half of the AORN membership
will be 63 or older. More concerning is that only about 14% of
today's AORN members are age 40 or younger.
I believe many AORN chapters across America are
experiencing these issues. We are challenged in the next year and
this decade to bring in new and younger members to keep the membership
alive. This year I will ask each of you to introduce AORN to
someone you work with and bring them to a meeting this year.
Our first meeting September 9, 2010 will be at
Exempla Lutheran Medical Center. This summer on June 10, 2010 ELMC
dedicated a new north pavilion with 12 new OR's, an 18 bed recovery
room, and a 24 bed pre-surgery area. Please join me as we start a
new year, a new decade of AORN, and bring a new perioperative colleague
to our chapter meeting.
There are many opportunities to still serve
DAORN this year. We still need many more members on most of the
committees. This is a great way to get started with DAORN.
We welcome all who want to be a part of this great chapter.
Plans are underway for the fall workshop and the OR
Nurse Week velebration at the museum in November. Let's have a
great year!
See you at the September meeting.
Warmest Reguards,
Jan Stull RN, MS, CNOR
DAORN President 2010-2011
